Abstract
Biplane transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) had a high sensitivity and specificity, but a low positive predictive accuracy for the detect ion of left atrial thrombus in 60 patients who underwent mitral valve surgery. The high false-positive rate observed in this study appears t o reflect the difficulty in differentiating severe spontaneous echo co ntrast from thrombus on TEE.
