The marine Miocene (Serravallian) deposits of El Camp de Tarragona (Ca
talonia, Spain) have yielded many specimens of the rosetted trace foss
il Dactyloidites ottoi (GEINITZ). The features that they show allow to
recognize that D. ottoi is an endogenic feeding trace fossil with a c
entral shaft and several branched radial elements with protrusive spre
iten. The sedimentary environment where the rocks hosting the trace we
re deposited in the studied outcrop, is very similar to those of other
localities where the icknospecies has been founded formerly. So, D. o
ttoi can be considered a good facies indicator for shallow marine, ene
rgetic environments, usually in warm climatic conditions.
