Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease caused by members of the genus Bruce
lla. The disease has an estimated annual incidence of one-half million
cases worldwide. It was first recognized in 1861 by Martson, and the
responsible organism was isolated in 1887 by Sir David Bruce [1], from
whom the disease gets its name [1]. This illness is also called Medit
erranean fever or Malta fever, because this is the region where the di
sease was first discovered.
