Collective laser cooling of two ions moving in a trapping potential is
studied theoretically in the limit when the distance between the ions
is smaller or comparable to the wavelength of the exciting laser ligh
t. A set of rate equations for the population of the trap levels is de
rived in the Lamb-Dicke limit, and for low laser intensities describin
g the effects of dipole-dipole interaction and super- and subradiance
on the cooling dynamics.
