Rate coefficients have been measured for the alkaline hydrolysis of me
thyl 2'-formylbiphenyl-2-carboxylate in 70% (v/v) dioxane-water at sev
eral temperatures; the relative rate of hydrolysis and the activation
parameters indicate the occurrence of neighbouring group participation
by the formyl group in alkaline hydrolysis, there being no evidence f
or significant ring-chain tautomerism in the 2'-formyl acid from ionis
ation and spectral measurements.
