Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their natural inhibitors (TIMPs)
have been widely implicated in tissue resorption, degradation, and fib
rosis in a range of normal and abnormal processes, but recently define
d additional actions suggest much broader and independent roles for di
fferent members of these gene families. This review examines the invol
vement of hormones in regulation of MMPs and TIMPs and focuses on know
n and potential roles of particular interest to endocrinologists.
