Recent theories and empirical work explaining racial differences in th
e levels of prejudice and discrimination against African-Americans all
ignore a more fundamental sociological explanation of intergroup conf
lict. Following Stark's (1994) theory on racial accommodation, we ask
''What will it take and how long will it rake for the U.S. black popul
ation to become equal to the majority population?'' The theory predict
s that if the black population does not achieve equality with whites i
n education and social and economic status, both successful and unsucc
essful blacks will continue to suffer prejudice and discrimination. Bu
t, once the black populations' status equals that of the white populat
ion, racial accommodation will occur. A model of what is needed to cha
nge the present inferiority of black educational, social, and economic
status to equal that of whites by the year 2068 is proposed and exami
