The electroretinogram (ERG) has been a traditional tool for the measur
ement and the analysis of spectral sensitivity. With the appropriate c
hoices of stimulus and measurement conditions, the ERG permits a nonin
vasive examination of photopigment complement and provides the means f
or studying the combination of spectral signals at various locations t
hroughout the retina. There are a number of practical problems associa
ted with making spectral measurements with the ERG. One approach to mi
nimizing these problems is to exploit the advantages of a flicker-phot
ometric procedure. We summarize a method used to conduct ERG flicker p
hotometry and illustrate a range of problems to which this technique c
an be successfully applied. (C) 1996 Optical Society of America
