Ao. Coker et Cl. Obi, A COMPARISON OF 2 SELECTIVE MEDIA FOR THE ISOLATION OF CAMPYLOBACTER-JEJUNI IN LAGOS, NIGERIA, Discovery and innovation, 7(1), 1995, pp. 57-59
A new selective medium, Butzler's medium Virion (BMV) known for its ef
ficacy in the isolation of Campylobacter jejuni from stool specimens w
orld-wide was compared with another selective medium, Butzler's type m
edium (BTM) developed in Nigeria and previously used alone for the iso
lation of the organism in our environment. Results presented show that
58 (9.7%) of the 600 stool specimens examined were positive for C. je
juni. Fifty five (95%) and 58 (100%) of the positive samples grew on B
utzler's medium Virion (BMV) and Butzler's type medium (BTM), respecti
vely, while 51 (81.5%) of the positive cultures grew on both media. Th
e difference in the isolation rate using the two selective media was n
ot statistically significant (p > 0.05) and hence both media are recom
mended to be used either singly or in parallel for the isolation of th
e organism in Nigeria.
