Conductive polyaniline was synthesized in aqueous 1.0 M oxalic acid co
ntaining 0.1 M aniline by electrochemical and chemical oxidation and c
haracterized by conductivity, solubility, ultraviolet and infrared spe
ctroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The solubility experiments showed t
hat the solubility of oxalic acid-doped polyaniline in dimethylsulfoxi
de and dimethylformamide increased to a certain extent. The soluble pa
rt of the polyaniline was free from impurities such as quinones. Cycli
c voltammetric studies in oxalic acid medium revealed that aniline exh
ibited a similar behaviour to that in H2SO4 and the polymerization rat
e was much slower than that in H2SO4.
