The starting compounds ethyl -amino/acetamido-5-arylthiothiazole-4-car
boxylates (4a-c and 5a-c) have been obtained by the reaction of ethyl
2-amino/acetamido-5-bromothiazole-4-carboxylates (1/2) with thiophenox
ide anions 3a-c. Attempts to dehydrocyclise the acids obtained by the
hydrolysis of 4a-c and 5a-c by PPA/H2SO4 to get the expected thioxanth
ones are unsuccessful (9 - 11) since the ca:ion formed in the presence
of acidic medium undergoes easy decarboxylation on heating. Compounds
6b and 7b have been found to show promising antibacterial and antifun
gal activities.
