Abstract
The first commercial operation oi a two-stage refiner for mechanical p ulp production was started up during 1996 at Ho[men Paper's Hallstavik mill (Sweden). This new concept combines the flexibility of smaller u nits with substantial savings in investment and operation (maintenance ) of large refiners. The results obtained with this Kvaerner Hymac HXD Refiner System are compared with those of conventional systems. Speci al attention is paid to Pulp quality (technological data) Operating co nditions and data (incl. energy consumption) Cost considerations (inve stment, maintenance etc.) Finally, the paper describes the most import ant design features of this new concept.
