The first photorefractive sol-gel film has been prepared by copolymeri
zation of tetraethoxysilane and modified silane monomers having push-p
ull azobenzene and carbazole moieties. Thin films poled by corona disc
harge exhibited large quadratic nonlinearities (electrooptic coefficie
nt r(33) approximate to 17 pm/V, at 633 nm). Preliminary two-beam coup
ling measurements, without applying external electric field, showed ph
otorefractivy of this new sol-gel material.
