To solve the much-argued problem of the charge transfer effect upon in
tercalation of iodine into C-60, we have analyzed the I L(I)-edge XANE
S spectrum of the iodine intercalated C-60 based on the energy shift i
n the multiple scattering region, the variation in Delta E (energy dif
ference between the absorption edge and continuum) and the calculation
of the WL area, together with that of I-2 and IBi2Sr2CaCu2Oy for comp
arison. The dependence of the edge energy in the multiple scattering r
egion on the bond distance is also examined. From the detailed analysi
s and careful calculation, we have found that the iodine upon intercal
ation into C-60 acts as an electron donor but that a very small degree
of charge transfer between the host and guest takes place.
