High quality paper grades were up till now to be calendered only on su
percalenders or high sophisticated softcalenders. The experiences from
the construction and operation of many thousand super- and softcalend
ers showed clearly all the shortcomings of these machines referring to
effectivity and economy. For these reasons conventional calenders wer
e to put all in question and a new technology, based on experiences re
cently made was to develop. So the JANUS Concept, a completely new cal
endering technology was created. The paper deals with the arguments le
ading to this costly development and it describes the technical featur
es of the new conception. Furthermore there are examples stated for dr
astically energy savings and the efficiency benefits obtained due to t
hat fact. The calendering results obtained online also with papermachi
ne- and coater speeds are discussed, above all for high quality rotogr
avure printing papers.
