Abstract
An investigation has been carried out into the production of spheroida l graphite aluminium cast iron, which was found to be affected by the melting technique and the inoculation treatments. These vital factors were evaluated in this study, thereby establishing a unique melting pr ocedure together with an inoculation technique. As a result, it is pos sible to obtain a carbide-free pearlitic matrix including a high nodul e count with a greater degree of nodularity. The results also show tha t the solidification characteristics of the Fe-C-Al alloy system are m ore complicated than those of the silicon-bearing system. Therefore, s pecial attention is necessary to produce spheroidal graphite aluminium cast iron.
