A new series of rhenium(V) complexes were prepared by the reaction of
2-benzimidazolethione with H-2[ReOCl5]. Mononuclear complexes of diffe
rent types, such as [ReOLCl(3)(OH2)], [ReOL(2)(OH2)(3)]Cl-3 and [ReOLC
l(OH2)(3)]Cl-2, and dinuclear complexes, such as [Re(2)O(3)L(2)Cl(4)].
2H(2)O and [Re(2)O(2)L(3)Cl(6)].2H(2)O, where L = 2-benzimidazolethion
e were obtained depending on the metal : ligand molar ratio and the co
ncentration of hydrochloric acid containing the starting rhenium compl
ex. The electronic absorption spectra and magnetic moments of the comp
lexes show that they have octahedral configurations. LR and conductivi
ty measurements combined with thermal analyses show that the ligand be
haves as a neutral, mono- or bidentate ligand towards the metal atoms.
