The evaluation of the levels of plasma cortisol, blood glucose, total
serum cholesterol and serum triglycerides was undertaken in 135 (50 co
ntrol, 40 irritable bowel syndrome and 45 essential hypertension) subj
ects in order to investigate the pattern of physiological changes in s
tressed clinical states with respect to normal controls. The findings
suggest that pronounced elevations in the atherogenic lipids (choleste
rol and triglycerides) in hypertensives could be the antecedent of fur
ther cardiovascular complications.
