A NEW SPECIES OF CRATEROMYS (RODENTIA, MURIDAE) FROM PANAY, PHILIPPINES

A new species of Crateromys is described from seven individuals, all o f which were collected from the Mount Baley-Mount Madja-as Range in we stern Panay, Philippines. The new species is compared with C. schadenb ergi, the largest species in the genus and restricted to the highlands of northern Luzon, with C. paulus, the smallest in over-all proportio ns, from Ilin Island off the southwestern coast of Mindoro, and with C . australis, from Dinagat Island off the northeastern coast of Mindana o. The latter two species are known only from the holotypes. Notes on the behavior of five captive animals also are presented.
