Abstract
Two cases in which a right-to-left shunt appeared across a patent fora men ovale after mitral valve surgery were clinically and echocardiogra phically followed for a long period of time. The right-to-left shunt m arkedly decreased in the supine position on transesophageal Doppler ec hocardiography in both cases within 2 years after the cardiac surgery, which presumably corresponds to a decreased risk of paradoxical embol ism.
