An observation performed by the SIGMA experiment on board the GRANAT s
atellite has given a negative result for the detection of hard X-rays
from the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068. We discuss the implications of this
result for the ''Unified Scheme'' of Active Galactic Nuclei and for th
is galaxy in particular. It imposes conditions on the absorbing materi
al, if one assumes that a typical Seyfert 1 hard X-ray continuum is in
deed hidden in the nucleus.
