Abstract
Phytochromes mediate a variety of developmental and growth processes i nvolved in the photomorphogenesis of plants. In this article, we revie w the current understanding of the structure and function of the photo receptor, discuss some very preliminary results, and offer speculation s and even conjectures that may elicit future studies into the molecul ar mechanisms of the phytochrome-mediated light signal transduction in plants.
