H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra were measured for a series of synthetic subst
ituted 1-bromo-2-aryloxyethanes and and monosubstituted xanthones. Sub
stituent effects were analysed and compared with those of the respecti
ve 3-aryloxypropiononitriles with the same substitution pattern. Spect
ral assignments were made on the basis of comparisons of coupled and H
-1-decoupled C-13 spectra and DEPT experiments. Two-dimensional homonu
clear H-1-H-1 and heteronuclear H-1-C-13 techniques (COSYDQF and XHCOR
RDC) were used for unequivocal signal-assignments.
