The reaction of trifluoromethylthiocopper with halomethanes, namely di
- and triiodo-, dibromodichloro-, dibromochlorofluoro-, dibromodifluor
o-, bromochlorofluoro-, phenyltrichloro-, bromocyano- and dibromofluor
o-methanes, has been investigated in detail. In addition to the expect
ed compounds, the formation of unusual products such as bis(trifluorom
ethyl) trithiocarbonate, dimethyl(trifluoromethylthio)benzene, bis(tri
fluoromethylthio) fluoromethane, (trifluoromethylthio) carbonyl fluori
de, carbon disulfide, carbon tetrachloride, trifluoromethylthiobenzoat
e, etc. was observed. In some cases, bis(trifluoromethylthio)mercury h
as been used instead of trifluoromethylthiocopper. The mechanism of fo
rmation of the various products and their mass spectral fragmentation
behavior are described.
