Extensive measurements were performed on a dummy head to investigate h
ow the pinnae encode directional information. Transfer functions and i
mpulse responses were examined to identify the features that contribut
e to localization. The results suggest that near-vertical spectral edg
es play a major role. This finding sheds a new light on the relationsh
ip between the characteristics of the external ear and the results of
earlier psychophysical experiments by Blauert and by Hebrank and Wrigh
t.
