An electron linear accelerator has been demonstrated that uses a slow
transverse electromagnetic wave (TE wave, 10 kW) supplemented with a c
rossed static magnetic field. An initial energy gain of 6.0 keV for el
ectrons is observed from an incident energy of 62 keV in a 0.5 m accel
erator without an additional external magnetic field. When an external
vertical magnetic field of 2.5 G is applied under the same conditions
, an additional 7.5 keV energy gain is observed. The results show the
feasibility of making a compact accelerator using TE mode electromagne
tic waves.
