Abstract
Children who participated in a pilot study of book gifting when they w ere babies are followed-up at age 3 and compared with a comparison gro up whose families received no book gift pack. Home-based observations of book sharing reveal that, on all eight focus points significant for early literacy, intervention group children showed substantially grea ter activity and participation in book sharing. The value of early boo k gifting is explored.
