Abstract
The case is made for a less constrained approach to the definition of symmetries of functions and differential equations, Differential equat ions with different algebras of point symmetries can have the same alg ebra of contact symmetries and hence are related by a contact transfor mation. Hidden symmetries are shown to be common objects and nonlocal symmetries underlie common methods of reduction to quadrature.
