Abstract
A comparison of HeI spectroheliograms and Yohkoh soft X-ray images of active regions indicates that Her absorption is enhanced at the feet o f hot X-ray loops. It is suggested that the conduction of heat from th e loops into the transition region at their feet would produce enhance d transition-region emission around 50 eV that would in turn cause enh anced excitation of HeI leading to the excess Her absorption that is o bserved.
