Db. Cornfield et R. Hodson, LABOR ACTIVISM AND COMMUNITY - CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES OF SOCIAL INTEGRATION IN LABOR UNIONS, Social science quarterly, 74(3), 1993, pp. 590-602
The Decline in U.S. labor union membership has compelled many unions t
o recruit socioeconomically diverse memberships which, ironically, may
jeopardize member activism inside unions. This study of member activi
sm in a diverse, state employee association shows that social integrat
ion affects activism and mediates the effects of individual predisposi
tions and workplace experiences, This suggests that unions can increas
e member activism by undertaking community-building activities.
