Seventeen species of mainly epiphyllous Lejeuneaceae are reported from
Western Melanesia (West Irian, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands). Fi
ve of them are new to the flora of the region: Acantholejeunea spinist
ipula (Herz.) Schust., Drepanolejeunea grandis Herz., Lejeunea dimorph
a Kodama, Stenolejeunea dentata (Steph.) Pocs, comb. nov. (Drepanoleje
unea dentata Steph.), and Stenolejeunea schiffneri (Herz.) Pocs, comb.
nov. (Crossotolejeunea schiffneri Herz.); four are new to the Huon Pe
ninsula and two to the Solomon Islands. The genus Acantholejeunea (Sch
ust.) Schust, is newly reported for Western Melanesia. Vegetative prop
agation by detaching specialized branches in Lejeunea dimorpha Kodama
is reported.
