Considerations on disturbances related to Shunt Capacitor Bank (SCB) s
witching are summarized and a unique damping circuit able to cope with
all of them is proposed. This damping circuit consists of a reactor i
n parallel with a resistor which is in series with a Metal Oxide Varis
tor (MOV), the latter being used to ''switch'' on the resistor only du
ring transients. The design parameters of this damping circuit are des
cribed and the main tests performed are presented.
