Abstract
Umbilical cord blood erythropoietin levels and hematocrit are signific antly higher in smoking mothers than those of nonsmoking ones. In addi tion, the incidence of newborns with low birthweight is higher in wome n who smoke. We conclude that in addition to other parameters, cord bl ood erythropoietin might be used as a valuable indicator of fetal dist ress in smokers.
