Three-dimensional (3-D) subband coding as a video compression system i
s particularly well suited for use where inexpensive, simple encoders
are needed. Program production or teleconferencing are good examples.
Since the system uses octave-width bands, it is inherently scalable. R
eal-time programmable hardware has been built to process video at vari
ous bit rates using this technique, and the results of these tests are
discussed.
