Ca. Lawrence et Sf. Chiu, A SPINNING CONCEPT FOR PRODUCING WOOLEN CARPET YARNS DIRECTLY FROM CARD SLIVER .1. THE DISC-RING SPINNING PROCESS, Textile research journal, 66(3), 1996, pp. 158-164
A new ring spinning concept is described, termed ''disc-ring spinning,
'' which enables woolen yarns to be produced directly from a carded sl
iver feed. Experiments are undertaken on a single spindle machine in o
rder to elucidate the importance of the various design variables of th
e spinning system to the stability of the process and the properties o
f 100% wool yarns. High speed photography is used to study the changes
in the configuration of fibers during the spinning process, which wil
l determine the structural characteristics of a woolen yam. The result
s of the work show that disc-ring spinning offers the opportunity for
carpet yarn manufacturers to dispense with a condenser at the woolen c
ard, with the benefit of a more cost-effective production process.
