SYNTHESIS AND CHEMISTRY OF 2,2'-BIS-SILYL-SUBSTITUTED 1,1'-BINAPHTHYLDERIVATIVES

A number of hitherto unknown 1,1'-binaphthyl derivatives bearing silyl substituents at the 2,2' positions have been prepared. The 2,2'-bis(d imethylsilyl)-1,1'-binaphthale 2a is stable in the pure state, but it converts smoothly into the cyclic disiloxane 4a with water and acids o r bases. The latter siloxane 4a can be converted back into the startin g bishydrosilane 2a with lithium aluminium hydride.
