Addition of alkalin metals such as K and Cs to zinc oxide-supported ni
ckel-molybdenum catalysts enhances the selectivity of the carbon monox
ide hydrogenation reaction towards alcohols formation. The higher frac
tion is favoured. XPS studies show that alkali metals molybdenum surfa
ce cause enrichment of the molybdenum surface which allows the develop
ment of a phase responsible for the formation of alcohol-precursor spe
cies.
