Rs. Cowles et al., IDENTIFICATION OF THE SEX-PHEROMONE OF THE WESTERN POPLAR CLEARWING MOTH (LEPIDOPTERA, SESIIDAE), Environmental entomology, 25(1), 1996, pp. 109-113
The sex attractant pheromone for western poplar clearwing, Paranthrene
robiniae (Hy. Edwards), was identified by field trapping, gas chromat
ography, mass spectroscopy, and electroantennography to be approximate
ly a 4:1 ratio of (E,Z):(Z,Z)-3,13-octadecadienyl alcohols. Efficient
attraction of male P, robiniae requires that both alcohol components b
e present. The blend of the 2 synthetic components should provide a se
nsitive and effective lure for monitoring western poplar clearwing mot
h populations.
