A brief background is given of the current and projected Australian en ergy scene (production, consumption, exports) and the associated green house gas emission scene. Against this background a brief overview, in dicative rather than comprehensive, follows of initiatives directed to mitigating greenhouse gas emissions which have been taken by governme nts (federal and state), industry sector-based organisations and the R &D community.
