Abstract
A simple necessary and sufficient condition is given for a polynomial P is an element of C[X, Y] to be a component of a polynomial automorph ism F = (P, Q). This condition also helps clarify the relationship bet ween P and Q and yields a new characterization of polynomial automorph isms in two variables.
