L. Verbist et al., COMPARATIVE ACTIVITY OF PIPERACILLIN TAZOBACTAM AGAINST 5625 ISOLATESFROM HOSPITALIZED-PATIENTS/, Journal of antimicrobial chemotherapy, 37(2), 1996, pp. 285-293
The comparative activities of piperacillin/tazobactam and other antibi
otics against 5625 Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria freshly is
olated from hospitalized patients was examined. The percentage of Ente
robacteriaceae susceptible to piperacillin/tazobactam, ceftazidime, im
ipenem and ciprofloxacin was very similar and varied from 81% to 84% i
n the Enterobacteriaceae with inducible type 1 beta-lactamases and fro
m 93 to 97% in the non-inducible organisms. Piperacillin/tazobactam wa
s similar in activity to ceftazidime against Pseudomonas aeruginosa an
d more active than imipenem or ciprofloxacin. Piperacillin/tazobactam
is more active than ceftazidime against Gram-positive bacteria (staphy
lococci, enterococci) and seems to be a promising antibiotic for nosoc
omial infections.
