Abstract
A number of fundamental problems in developmental and cell biology wer e articulated in Johannes Holtfreter's classic papers on tissue affini ty and mechanisms of amphibian gastrulation. These problems remain uns olved and would be profitably revisited with modern methods of cell an d molecular biology. (C) 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
