The structure of an apocarotenoid (1% of total carotenoid) isolated fr
om the seed coat of Bixa Orellana fruit was established as methyl 9'Z-
apo-6'-lycopenoate (methyl 9'Z-6'-apo-psi-caroten-6'-oate) by means of
UV-visible and 500 MHz H-1 NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Th
e well-known C-40-carotenes phytoene, phytofluene, g-carotene and neur
osporene were tentatively identified.
