Abstract
A method is proposed for interpreting the results of recent quartz mic robalance measurements of shear friction, based on a model in which th e friction is assumed to be proportional to a power of the velocity of the adsorbed film relative to the microbalance. The amplitude depende nce of the quality factor Q of this model for the microbalance is show n to depend critically on the exponent of the velocity in the force la w, allowing one to infer this exponent from experiment.
