In the layered structure of delafossite-type metal oxides ABO2, the B
position can be occupied by a wide spectrum of trivalent or couples of
divalent/tetravalent cations. In the A position, however, only monova
lent, linearly coordinated cations are accommodated. This study focuse
s on the thermochemical reactivity of AgNi0.5Ti0.5O2 and CuNi0.5Ti0.5O
2 in O2 and H-2. The influence of the A cation, i.e. Ag or Cu, on the
course of thermally induced processes as well as on the product format
ion has been investigated by means of thermal analysis, mass spectrome
try and X-ray diffraction. In dependence of the atmosphere, a variety
of different solid products can be generated under well controlled con
ditions.
