Abstract
The location, environment and availability of the interlamellar specie s in modified layered silicates have been investigated using two montm orillonites selected with different charge deficit distributions. A st ructural study has revealed release of protons and further migration t o the lattice as thermal treatments are performed. The proton availabi lity has been examined through a catalytic reaction, all the modified samples showing similar activities in this test. A possible explanatio n for this levelling effect has been suggested.
