Mechanisms of the photogeneration of free charge carriers in polymers
are discussed. The photogeneration proceeds via a transition state of
bonded ion pairs, which are formed due to the interband excitation or
excited autoionization. Free charge carriers are formed by dissociatio
n of these pairs in an external electrical field, which process can be
described in terms of the Onsager's theory of pair recombination. The
photogeneration quantum yield may be increased by doping with electro
n accepters.
