A synthetic pathway to obtain pure phases of reduced molybdenum phosph
ates in air is described. Starting from mixtures of MoO3 and (NH4)2HPO
4 with different molar ratios Mo/P, and controlling the time and tempe
rature of heating, the compounds: MoOPO4, (MoO)2P4O13, MoP2O and Mo(PO
3)3 have been prepared. Their spectroscopic and magnetic properties ar
e discussed on the basis of the structural features. Both a significan
t effect of the spin-orbit coupling and the existence of antiferromagn
etic interactions, propagated via the \PO4\ groups, have been observed
.
