Recent results from the literature about the chemistry of carbon oxide
s and sulfides are reviewed. The generation and characterization of el
usive polycarbon oxides and sulfides XC(n)Y, XY=O,S and n greater-than
-or-equal-to 2 by neutralization-reionization mass spectrometry or fla
sh vacuum pyrolysis and matrix isolation techniques is described. The
electronic ground state of dicarbon disulfide, C2S2, is discussed taki
ng theoretical results and experimental observations into consideratio
n. Finally, the sulfides CS3 and C6S6 are presented.
