D. Vermot et al., EFFICACY OF CLARITHROMYCIN VERSUS THAT OF CLINDAMYCIN FOR SINGLE-DOSEPROPHYLAXIS OF EXPERIMENTAL STREPTOCOCCAL ENDOCARDITIS, Antimicrobial agents and chemotherapy, 40(3), 1996, pp. 809-811
Clarithromycin is compared with clindamycin for single-dose prophylaxi
s of streptococcal endocarditis in rats. Human-like kinetics of the tw
o antibiotics prevented endocarditis in animals challenged with both s
mall and large amounts of bacterial inocula. Clarithromycin was margin
ally superior to clindamycin against small amounts of inocula. Clarith
romycin may be considered for endocarditis chemoprophylaxis in human.
